Beyond Angkor - An overnight expedition to the incredible Preah Vihear and Koh Ker temple complex

This incredible overnight expedition starts in Siem Reap and travels through remote villages and over 200km to Preah Vihear Province, sitting on the edge of the Thai border.

Our journey takes us through small communities with stops along the way.  Midway into our trip, we come to the village of Analong Veng, the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge.  We visit the house of Ta Mok, one of the key leaders of the Khmer Rouge who remained powerful after they were overthrown in 1979.  His unassuming house overlooks a lake and is decorated with murals of Angkor Wat.  This provides an interesting backdrop for your guide to share some of Cambodia's most tragic, and very recent history.

Our next stop is at the foothills of the 525m cliff where we trade our car for a more powerful truck for the climb up to Preah Vihear temple. This remarkable temple is exceptionally well preserved and hours can be lost exploring the extensive site.

Overnight stay in at the Preah Vihear boutique hotel, where a nice pool offers welcome relief after a big day of explorations.

Today we will wind our way back to Siem Reap via the beautiful temple complex of Koh Ker.  Over 180 temples were originally part of this extensive 10th-century site.  Today over 20 ruins can be accessed by visitors.  This heavily forested area provides a beautiful shady setting to explore the ancient temples.  The iconic 7 tiered pyramid is the centrepiece for your visit and the views across the plateau from the top are incredible.

Return to Siem Reap around 4.30 pm
