Angkor Uncovered (Small Group Tour)

8:00am - 3:30pm Angkor Uncovered Small Group Tour takes in the main sites of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom City, Bayon and Ta Prohm; bringing to life the history of the Khmer Empire and providing an insight into an amazing civilisation.

The Khmer Empire created the largest religious monument ever built when they constructed the amazing Angkor Wat along with it hundreds of other small monuments and temples. Angkor Uncovered Small Group Tour takes in the main sites of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom City, Bayon and Ta Prohm; bringing to life the history of the Khmer Empire and providing an insight into an amazing civilisation.

This tour stars with the beautiful Ta Prohm temple where massive tree roots and ancient temple stones entwine; at this time off the morning there are less people around, so you can take your time and get some great photos. Visit the amazing Angkor Wat, and the many temples located within the ancient city of Angkor Thom.  Experience the incredible Bayon adorned with smiling stone faces, the incredible terrace of the Leper King, Elephant Terrace and many other incredible sites. Our guides make an extra effort to get you away from the hordes of travellers, and explore some of the smaller, more peaceful paths through the temples.

Our day begins at the magical Ta Prohm temple where ancient stones and massive tree roots are locked in battle. These trees and stones provide a stunning temple experience and this is a wonderful place to start the days temple touring.  After weaving our way through the beautiful Ta Prohm we journey into the ancient city of Angkor Thom

Explore the ancient walled city and visit the mystical Bayon temple adorned with smiling faces. Journey through the jungle to the famous Bayon which is now everyone’s favorite site. Surrounded by hundred of smiling faces in stone, the temple is definitely stunning and mysterious.
We head further into the temple complex visiting Baphoun, a pyramid-temple mountain consecrated to God Shiva, Elephant and leper king terraces, the royal temple of Phimean Naga and the serene Preah Pithu groups of smaller temples. Enjoy a walk on the ancient walls of this city  and relax with a  hot Cambodian style picnic lunch is provided in a shaded area.

Following Angkor Thom we head to the jewel of the Khmer Empire and visit the amazing Angkor Wat.  The amazing temples of Angkor were constructed to express the wealth and power of the Khmer Empire at the time’. Many stone inscriptions describing the foundations of the temple have been found but Khmers left no word to tell how this great empire collapsed.  Come and dig out some secrets of Angkor with our experienced guide, reveal the stories and legends behind the sandstone carved bas-reliefs, gables and lintels. Stroll around this massive monument to admire the Khmer architectural masterpiece and engineering.

Phare, The Cambodian Circus

An amazing blend of traditional and modern theater, music, dance, acrobatic, juggling and contortion beautifully choreographed and performed in a story about Cambodian lives and society.
This is a great experience and should not be missed.  Pop into our office and watch a bit of the circus on our screen, find out which show is running and talk to our team about the performances.
“Phare, the Cambodian Circus” is an offshoot project of Phare Ponleu Selpak (Association) which translates as “Brightness of the Arts” in English. PPS Association is a Cambodian non-profit, non-governmental association founded in 1994 by eight young Cambodians ex-refugees artists in the area of Anchanh Village, Ochar Commune, Battambang Province.

The Circus performs nightly in Siem Reap with shows commencing at 8.00pm; we recommend arriving by 7:30pm to get a good seat! If you plan to have dinner at Phare Cafe (highly recommended!) we recommend arriving at 6:30pm.

Some of our favourite shows!

(Please check with our team for the current schedule, or visit www.facebook.com/beyonduniqueescapes)

Chillls (Preu)

In Cambodia, we take our ghosts seriously. Unless it’s the performance ‘Preu’ (Chills) at Phare, the Cambodian Circus in Siem Reap. ‘Preu’ is the story of a group of students who encounter ghosts during the night while sleeping.  These young Cambodians confront their fears and anxieties with all the courage they can muster. ‘Preu’ is a modern Cambodian circus play performed by Generation 5 student artists of Phare Ponleu Selpak Artistic and Social Center. The performance mixes theater, music, dance, acrobatics, juggling, aerial acts, contortion and other circus skills to portray this beautiful story about Cambodian culture and beliefs. Immerse yourself in the universe of ‘Preu’ without worry, because to overcome your fears, you need to face them first.

Eclipse (Sokrias)

Steeped in the Cambodian culture and popular beliefs, Eclipse is a tale about discrimination. A young man, who suffers from being rejected because of his difference, prays for divine intervention. The gods transform him into a very attractive woman, suddenly getting a lot of positive attention, until a mysterious plague begins to consume all the villagers. Eclipse artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent.  You will leave feeling elated by this story of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

Sokha

Sokha is a child haunted by visions of the atrocities and destruction by the Khmer Rouge. Her memories and the surreal weave with myths and facts. Cringing in darkness, consumed by her fears, Sokha discovers her strength and resilience, and gathers all her determination to fight despair. Thanks to her trust in human nature, her choice as an adult will be to believe in social reconstruction by youth using art as a healing and solidarity factor between generations.

Amazing circus techniques and powerful visual arts, accompanied by live traditional and original Cambodian music, reveal the long term affects suffered by post-war victims while maintaining a strong sense of optimism and triumph of the human spirit.

Sokha’ s life is a metaphor of Phare Ponleu Selpak association’s beginnings. The 8 cofounders returned to Cambodia in 1994 after spending their childhood in refugee camps in Thailand, where they received art therapy to overcome the trauma. They opened an artistic and social centre in Battambang to rebuild their community and help others from exceptionally difficult social and economic backgrounds. Phare is now internationally famous for the energy, passion, and talent of its artists and quality of its productions.

Khmer Metal!

Khmer Metal is nightlife, adventure, passion, love, hope, heartbreak, tears and derision with humour and humanity. Khmer Metal reflects on urban life while its rock band pounds like your heartbeat. In a funky, grungy Phnom Penh rock bar, the well-connected owner Bang Son, small dealer and occasional fraudster, is used to getting into trouble with his “brother” Chhaya, the nominal bar security guard.

An edgy, progressive modern tale performed by talented young Cambodians using music, dance, acting and modern circus arts.

Phsong Preng (The Adventure)

The Adventure tells the moving and exciting story of a young Cambodian boy who leaves his hometown in search of a better life. He flees his home, where he is abused by his mother, and meets new unusual friends from a “medicine show” waiting for a taxi. When the “taxi” arrives, they all travel to Phnom Penh. There they get to experience the dark side of life, before our hero ends up beaten and robbed by a gang of thugs finally ending up in hospital.

He is saved by a chance meeting with a band of smart street urchins, who take him in as one of their own, building his confidence and helping him to hold his head high. Bolstered by his adventures, he finally decides he is ready to return home.

Phsong Preng is a modern Cambodian tale mixing high level theatre, music, dance, acrobatics and juggling, which carries you on an emotional and exciting journey through today’s Cambodia.

The Great Tonle Sap - Kompong Khleang Lake Community (Small Group Tour) × × × × × × ×
The Great Tonle Sap - Kompong Khleang Lake Community (Small Group Tour)

The Great Tonle Sap - Kompong Khleang Lake Community (Small Group Tour)

Kompong Khleang is one of the more remote and less visited communities on The Great Tonle Sap Lake; it it also one of the largest! You can see stilted and floating houses and Khmer and Vietnamese living and working side by side.

Tonle Sap Lake Villages and communities are an amazing site at any time of the year and there are a number of these villages that can be visited in Cambodia. Situated on the flood plains of the Tonle Sap lake the world around these homes undergoes dramatic transformation from dry to wet season. In the dry season homes tower on their tall spindly stilts. Fishermen repair boats and nets, children make clay balls to use with their sling shots and enjoy the freedom of being able to run around.

In the wet season the water laps at the floor boards of the houses, travel is limited to wooden canoes, boats and other makeshift watercraft; even large steel cooking bowls and buckets! Children paddle to and from school and life generally revolves around fishing. In Kompong Khleang, many families also have very simple houseboats that they use to venture out further onto the lake when the water is high.

Kompong Khleang floating community is located around 1 hours drive from Siem Reap and is generally accessible all year round, though it depends on the lake levels which vary from year to year. Just before turning off National Road No. 6, we stop at a small local market, Phsaa Thnal Jaek where you can see piles of fresh vegetables, local breakfast restaurants, tasty snacks and of course, fish fish fish!... still alive, freshly caught and salted and sun-dried all from the nearby lake.

We drive another 20 minutes before reaching the boat station, but before we do, we take a short walk in the village to see some of the stilted houses and local shops up close and to say 'bye bye' to the very friendly children and villagers. There are very few tourists in the village at this time, so it's a great time to get some photos and wander around.

We board the boat and motor through the village to see some of the houses from water level, and to see some of the fishing methods up close...such as 'fish badminton'! The first part of the village is stilted houses but as you progress further towards the lake, the houses disappear and are replaced by mangrove forest and open water. As the water recedes and the land starts to dry out, some fishing families become farmers, growing snake beans and watermelons know as some of the best in the the country.

Eventually you will reach the floating houses made up of Khmer and Vietnamese fishing families; you can easily tell the difference between their nationalities by the decoration of their houses. When the water is low, they relocate their floating abodes further out onto the lake.

Finally we arrive on the main body of the Great Tonle Sap lake; the guide will explain about what makes the lake so special and why it is so important to Cambodian and the whole region.

The Kompong Khleang Experience includes:

- English speaking guide
- Transport by A/C car or van
- A visit to a local market
- A village walk to learn about daily life and to see the village up close and meet the people
- A 1 hour boat trip to explore the village and visit the lake

- Visit to a sticky rice village

Pedals and Paddles - Small Group Tour

A full day of adventure and exploration! Enjoy a great mix of kayaking on the Tonle Sap through the floating villages and riding through the picturesque Siem Reap countryside.

Biking the countryside and learning about village life

Making an early start, we pedal our way north to one of two great irrigation reservoirs from the Angkor period, the West Baray. We ride along the wall of this impressive man-made lake and then ride south along the canals that are fed by the Baray. In the late morning we find ourselves in a small village, typical of those surrounding Siem Reap. Life here is still simple and based on seasonal agriculture. We take a walk through the village with a local resident who will explain the workings of this community before we sit down to a tasty lunch and spend some time chilling in a hammock.

Kayak the floating villages and Tonle Sap Lake
As the sun begins to drop in the sky, we make our way to a nearby river and shuttle by boat to our kayaks. We then take a paddle through the floating villages, where friendly locals will greet you with smiles as you are using a manner of transport that impacts their lives far less than the noisy, smelly and disruptive tourist boats that sometimes come through. After exploring the neighborhood and possibly also some of the mangrove forest, we set out for the open lake where the sheer size of this body of water becomes apparent. Your guide will explain the phenomenon that results in a depth variance of up to eight meters and why this lake is vital to Cambodia's survival.

We return to Siem Reap by car and can expect to arrive back around 6:30pm, depending on the seasons and the time of the sunset.

~ 30km cycling
2 hours kayaking

ON THE ROAD
This ride is predominantly on flat tracks and small roads - there is only one, tiny hill, so anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this tour. There are some sections on small dirt trails with sand so beginner riders should not choose this tour.

ON THE WATER
The kayaking is on flat water for around 2 hours so it's perfectly achievable, even for those who haven't kayaked before.

WHAT IS THIS?

The Great Escape is a live escape room game located in Siem Reap. You are locked in a room with friends, family or work colleagues for an hour and have to solve a series of puzzles and mysteries to escape.

You will have to search high and low for clues and work together if you want to escape. You have 60 minutes to escape by using only your brain (this may be a problem for a lot of you), there are no physical activities or challenges involved in the game.

WILL I ENJOY THIS?

Yes. It is a unique experience and one that will stay with you for a long time. Each room is carefully designed to ensure maximum entertainment value. If you are looking for a fun group activity that is slightly different this is the activity for you.

WHO NORMALLY PLAY THIS?

A complete mixture of personality, ages, sexes and nationalities play live escape games. Teams can be made up of friends, family, work mates, student peers, travellers and many others. It is a great team and corporate building exercise or a fantastic experience to celebrate a special occasion.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Wear whatever you want. We wouldn’t recommend heels, mankinis, Darth Vader fancy dress or full traditional wedding wear but anything can be worn.

WILL I GET SCARED AND AM I SAFE?

Yes you are completely safe. There is no fear aspect within any of the rooms. If you want to leave the room at any point you can. All rooms are monitored by staff at all times.

WHEN CAN I PLAY IT? WHAT ARE YOUR OPENING HOURS?

We are open 10.00am – 10pm 7 days a week.

HOW HARD IS THE GAME?

Around 40% of people escape. Common sense goes a lot further than intelligence. You do not need any special ‘skills’ to get out of the room, a very basic level of English and numbers will be enough. Each room has a difficulty rating out of 5. Could we tell you more? Yes, but we wouldn’t want to spoil the experience.

Get to the heart of Cambodia — through its food! Take a trip into the Cambodian countryside and show off your cooking skills with this hands-on culinary adventure. You’ll whip up a 3-course gourmet meal, get to experience local village life

  • Always dreamed of being a Cambodian chef? This is your chance! Your Siem Reap cooking class will begin at a temple ruin in the middle of the community. We’ll take a mini tour through a local village, where you’ll get to see locals returning from the rice fields, and maybe buffalo and ox carts being led by their owners. Your local guide will tell you a bit about daily life and introduce you to some of the many fruits and vegetables that are grown locally. You’ll also see local houses and get to peek inside a kitchen (where you can imagine what it’s like to cook an entire family meal on a charcoal pot).

You’ll arrive at our lovely cooking venue (complete with charming herb garden) close to sunset. Your guide will show you some local herbs and you’ll get to collect a few to use in this evening’s dishes. Then scrub up and get ready to cook!

Your Siem Reap cooking experience is very hands-on; your guide will teach you a few tricks and techniques for preparing the ingredients, but everything is done by you. You’ll prepare a starter, a main, and a dessert, as well as a cocktail or herbal tea, depending on your choice. You’ll also learn some simple presentation techniques — perfecting for impressing friends back home with your awesome talents at your next dinner party.

Before dinner is served, you’ll have time to relax in a peaceful dining pavilion, surrounded by a tropical garden. This might also be a good time to taste-test a cocktail or herbal tea before settling in to enjoy your fresh, tasty Khmer creations. Our professional team will serve your dishes and you can finally savour the flavours of your labour!

Best of all, if you love what you made, we’ll help you replicate it at home — you’ll get a recipe card to take back with you.

Bike Angkor at Twilight ( Small Group tour )

Half day bike tour in Siem Reap, Cambodia - Bike Siem Reap and the Angkor countryside when it is most beautiful, in the afternoon leading up to sunset.

Hidden Trails

While we take you to past many of the iconic temples of the Angkor Archeological Park our means of travel is half the fun. We ride the back roads and hidden dirt trails to escape the crowds and bus tourists.

Tour Itinerary

We ride past the King’s Siem Reap residence and through the Royal Gardens. In the large trees, you can see hundreds of giant fruit bats before their evening flight into the Angkor forests.

Continuing up the Siem Reap River we ride past private homes and small riverside markets. The juxtaposition of rich and poor can at times be dramatic. Crossing the river we wind our way along red clay roads and small dirt trails, through a series of local villages, crossing small farms and passing school children on their way home. We make our way towards the west edge of the Angkor Park.

After a brief stop to refuel on cold water and fresh fruit we’ll continue our ride. We bypass the crush of visitors exiting the Park and instead follow single track lanes, past stunning rice fields and small, historic family parcels where life appears unchanged for generations.

As the temples close to visitors we will access Park roads and trails to view this remarkable historic site in a different context, twilight, and poise ourselves for a glimpse of sunset as the day comes to a close.

To complete the evening we take a peaceful Dragon Boat ride on the moat of Angkor Thom, with local delicacies and refreshments on board.

At the end of our boat ride an air-conditioned van is waiting to transport us back to the Grasshopper shop in Siem Reap to arrive around 7pm, with plenty of time to enjoy dinner and evening cultural activities in town.

Islands of the Mekong Cycling Tour (Small Group Tour)

This trip runs from Phnom Penh. Enjoy a morning bicycle ride on quiet back roads of the Silk Islands, near Phnom Penh, visiting local communities and farmland to witness village life in the Cambodian countryside.

Who would have thought, that only 5km from the heart of Cambodia's capital city, there is an island oasis where one can take a bike ride at a gentle pace and discover true rural Cambodia.

These islands, created by the flows of the Mekong River, are isolated by the lack of bridges, but ferry connections provide easy access for villagers who use the fertile soil here to grow fruit and vegetables and then weave silk and cotton in between farming cycles.

The absence of most four wheeled traffic makes for a peaceful ride where you can almost forget that the hustle of a city is just nearby. The riding is flat and easily achievable for anyone who can ride a bike and we take care to ensure a high degree of safety, making this a truly family friendly experience.

Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
Meet at the Grasshopper Adventures Shop at 8am with your camera, sunscreen and some comfortable clothing.

Day in a Life Experience (Private Tour)

A full day authentic & interactive village experience... if you are hungering for a real insight into daily life in Cambodia, this is the ultimate experience! Have an amazing time, while also contributing something back to the community.

Day in a Life Experience
Located around 16km from Siem Reap Kompheim Village is a small village made up of farmers and itinerant workers. The village is a mixture of type 1,2 and 3 households. Type one families typically struggle to meet daily needs, and often struggle for food. Our Day in a Life program aims to work mostly with these households. On every tour a host family looks after the group. This host family welcomes you into their home and lives for the day. These families receive a small payment for being the host family and a larger contribution is made to a village fund.

The village fund is used for special village projects like water filters and water wells. We work with the families to determine the projects that need to be undertaken.
It is extremely important that you do not hand out gifts, lollies or money to these families or children, no matter how dire the situation seems. Providing gifts can cause problems within the village and jealousy among families and relatives. Should you wish to help please discuss with our team. You will notice that many children suffer poor dental hygiene. Please do not buy or hand out lollies - this only contributes to the problem.

Duration:
8:00am - 3:00pm
Pick-up: 08:00am pick up and drop off from hotel included in the price.
Inclusions: Hotel pick-up, English speaking guide, village activities, 1 x fruit tree, Khmer lunch + fresh fruit, bottled water, cold towels. Contributions to HUSK Cambodia, local families and the whole community.
What to Wear
We recommend that you wear sturdy footwear like trainers / sneakers.  Long sleeves and pants are ideal - we also suggest sunglasses and a hat.  Please refrain from wearing revealing clothing in villages.

Important Note

Please note providing gifts is a wonderful gesture but can cause issues of jealousy and lead to a damaging begging cycle.  If you would like to help please discuss this with our staff who can provide information on the best way to make a meaningful difference.  You may also visit www.huskcambodia.org
